Nigeria Can Qualify If We Beat Iceland -Gernot Rohr

Gernot Rohr

2018 FIFA World CupGernot Rohr of Nigeria is not giving up hope of making it to the second round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, despite losing 2-0 to Croatia in their first match.

Nigeria conceded both goals from poor defending of corner kicks, as Oghenekaro Etebo put the ball in his own net from a diving Mandzukic header. Troost-Ekong fouled Mandzukic in the box, in an attempt to get at a corner kick. The resulting penalty was duly converted by Modric.

Rohr admitted his fault at the poor set piece defending of his squad, and is hoping to get a win against Iceland in their next group fixture.

“We are disappointed. We recognise that Croatia had the better team tonight and my young players made mistakes, again on the corners,” Rohr said after the game.

“The first goal was a corner, the second goal a penalty from a corner. There were also many fouls in the other box, they could have also given a penalty for us. Now we have to win against Iceland. If we win the next game, all is possible for qualification.”

Lionel Messi missed a second-half penalty as Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by debutants Iceland in an eventful Group D opener.
Hannes Thor Halldorsson was the hero for Iceland as the goalkeeper’s penalty save from Lionel Messi secured his side a sensational 1-1 draw against Argentina.

With Diego Maradona watching on from the stands, Messi failed to convert from the spot in the second half of an eventful Group D opener at the Otkrytie Arena in Moscow.

Sergio Aguero had fired the beaten finalists from four years ago ahead in the 19th minute, finally breaking his World Cup duck at the ninth attempt with a rising left-footed drive.

Yet debutants Iceland refused to melt on the main stage, Alfred Finnbogason capitalising on Willy Caballero’s weak punch to score his country’s maiden goal in the history of the tournament just four minutes later.Iceland were indebted to Halldorsson for picking up a point, though, as he kept out Messi’s spot-kick shortly after the hour mark.Argentina will hope to inject some impetus into their campaign when they face Croatia in Nizhny on Thursday, while Iceland go up against Nigeria in Volgograd the following day.
