Son Heung-min

Tottenham star Son Heung-min has become the top scoring Asian in Champions League history with his quick-fire double against Manchester City.

Spurs went down 1-0 in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg, with Raheem Sterling scoring City’s fastest ever Champions League goal just three minutes and 51 seconds in the game.

But Tottenham’s South Korean star popped up with goals in the seventh and 10th minutes to give his side the lead.

That lead wouldn’t last long though in a wild first half, with Bernardo Silva levelling the match just a minute after Son’s second and Sterling scoring his second and City’s third 10 minutes after that.

Son, however, had already made history after he scored the game’s only goal in the first leg in London last week.

With 12 goals, Son is now the leading goalscoring Asian in Champions League history, passing former Dynamo Kyiv star Maksim Shatskikh (Uzbekistan) for the record.

It has been another prolific season for Son, with the 26-year-old having now reached 20 goals in all competitions for Spurs this season.

Wednesday’s game saw other records set, with the frantic start setting the mark for the fastest four goals ever scored in a single Champions League match.

In addition, Son and Sterling’s early goals meant Wednesday was the first time in Champions League history that two players have scored two goals in the first 21 minutes of the same game.

Nigerian Senate passes police reform bill

Nigerian Senate has passed the Police Reform Bill 2019 during today’s plenary session. The bill titled, Senate Bill 683 bill was passed after the third reading.

Senator Tijjanj Kaura (APC-Zamfara North) had presented the report, and it was seconded by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa (PDP-Abia North). They both asked the Senate to consider the report of the Committee on Police Affairs on the Police Reform Bill, 2019 (SB. 683), following which the Senate moved into the presentation and consideration of report.

The Senate, in considering the bill, dissolved into the Committee of the Whole for its clause-by-clause consideration.

In his response to the passing of the bill, Senate President Bukola Saraki noted that the bill was passed to “ensure that the Police officers are of better condition and are more productive.”

“We want to ensure that our people are protected at all time. I think this is a very great achievement for all of us and I hope we continue to provide better security for our people, protect lives and citizens.

“This will go a long way to show that we are a listening Parliament, listening Senate and there is nothing better we can do in honour of those who have lost their lives along the way due to the fact that our laws at that time were not in line,” Saraki added.

He expressed gratitude to “the Deputy Leader and all those who had contributed for this very important Bill.”

Saraki noted that since 1943, nothing has been done in addressing the Police Act as a reform; expressing thanks to the Senate Police Committee. “I want to thank particularly the Police Committee; the Chairman and members, and our colleagues for their contributions and their work in passing this Bill,” Saraki said.

President Buhari Promises Bill Gates

President Buhari last night commended one of the world’s richest men, Bill Gates for his consistent and generous support to public causes around the globe, and specifically for supporting the eradication of polio and HIV diseases in Africa and Nigeria in particular.

Speaking in a telephone call to congratulate the President upon his resounding election victory, winning a second four-year term of office, Gates, who said he was happy to be associated with the President, restated his commitment to the success of the administration as well as the progress, prosperity and well-being of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He expressed willingness to do more for the country.

President Buhari reiterated his opinion that Mr Gates’ wealth has benefited Nigeria’s development, and expressed appreciation for the call.

“I am very happy the way your projects have touched the life of the average Nigerian. The people of this country have given their verdict. This verdict says we have to work hard to meet their expectations. God willing, we will not fail, ” the President said.

Alan Garcia

Alan Garcia,Peru’s former president died in a hospital in Lima on Wednesday, hours after shooting himself in the head to avoid arrest in connection with a bribery probe, authorities said on Wednesday.

Garcia had been one of nine people a judge had ordered to be arrested on Wednesday for alleged involvement in bribes distributed by Odebrecht, a Brazilian construction company that triggered Latin America’s biggest graft scandal when it admitted in 2016 that it had paid kickbacks to politicians across the region to secure lucrative contracts.

Members of his party announced his death to crowds gathered outside of hospital Casimiro Ulloa, where he suffered three cardiac arrests and underwent emergency surgery.

President Martin Vizcarra said on Twitter that he was “consternated” by Garcia’s death, and sent his condolences to his family members.

Garcia governed as a nationalist from 1985 to 1990 before remaking himself as a free-market proponent and winning another five-year term in 2006.

He had denied wrongdoing involving Odebrecht, and blamed his legal troubles on political persecution.

“Others might sell out, not me,” Garcia said in broadcast comments on Tuesday, repeating a phrase he has used frequently as his political foes became ensnared in the Odebrecht investigation.

Interior Minister Carlos Moran said at a news conference before Garcia died that the former president had told police he needed to call his attorney after they arrived at his home in Lima to arrest him.

“He entered his room and closed the door behind him,” Moran said. “Within a few minutes, a shot from a firearm was heard, and police forcibly entered the room and found Mr. Garcia sitting with a wound in his head.”

FG Declares Friday And Monday Public Holidays To Celebrate Easter

Minister of Interior, Lieutenant Gen. Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (Retd) who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, enjoined all Christians to emulate the exemplary attributes of Jesus Christ amongst which are tolerance, love and peaceful co-existence.

This was conveyed in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Barr. Georgina Ekeoma Ehuriah, and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday.

Dambazau, urged all Nigerians at home and abroad to use the occasion to pray for the peace,unity, and progress of Nigeria irrespective of diversity in religious beliefs.

The Minister while wishing all Nigerians a happy and peaceful Easter celebration, further called on them to support the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in its determination to take the country to the next level.

OLOWO OF OWO, OBA FOLAGBADE OLATERU-OLAGBEGI IS DEAD

According to a report by Vanguard, the Olowo of Owo in Ondo state, Oba Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi CFR is dead.

Oba Olagbegi who died last night was 77 years.

He was installed as the traditional ruler of the ancient town in 2003 by the late governor Olusegun Agagu. He was appointed Chancellor of the University of Benin in 2005 and later chancellor University of Abuja.

He is currently chancellor of the University of Jos and former chairman of the Ondo council of Obas.

He was married to Olori Ololade Olateru Olagbegi and the family was blessed with children and grandchildren.

Igho Sanomi

Igho Sanomi, is set to lose his three apartments in London to a Swiss bank over $3 million debt, Bloomberg reports.

The bank, Credit Suisse, has already put the jet seized from Sanomi up for sale.

Sanomi was said to be guarantor for a credit facility extended to one of his companies by the bank.

In a written submission to a London court last week, counsel to Credit Suisse, Andrew Brown, said: “three properties owned by Sanomi, including apartments in Chelsea, West London, and Belgravia, in the heart of London’s diplomatic quarter, have already been identified as assets that may have to be forfeited if he loses.”

Sanomi was not represented in court. Bloomberg also said his lawyers did not respond to requests for comments.

Several firms are also filing suits against him for unpaid debts.

Sanomi’s company, Taleveras Energy founded in 2004, trades more than 100 million barrels of crude oil annually and is targeting investments in biofuel.

Taleveras has offices in London, Geneva, Cape Town, Dubai, Ivory Coast, Abuja and Lagos.

Sanomi was born in Agbor, Delta State, in 1975 to a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police. He is a graduate of Geology and Mining from the University of Jos.

Female Corper Dies In Bauchi State NYSC Orientation Camp

According to a report by Independent Nigeria, the tragedy occurred barely four days after the 2019 Batch “A” corps members reported for the three weeks orientation course at the Wailo NYSC camp in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

It was gathered that on that fateful morning of April 1, Miss Magdalene had reportedly complained to NYSC officials about her protracted asthma illness and how she would not be fit to attend the ‘morning meditation’ but her complainants fell on deaf ears.

Against her will, she was forced to attend the ‘meditation’ and collapsed a few minutes later. She was immediately attended to by corps member doctors and nurses, but when attempts to resuscitate her were not yielding results, she rushed to ATBUTH to save her life.

Further inquiries from medical doctors at the hospital concerning what could have led to the untimely death of Miss Magdalene had no answers as they were not authorized to speak to anyone about her demise.

It was learned that Miss Magdalene Yohanna, an orphan, sponsored her education throughout her higher institution. She has been buried at her home town in Kaduna amidst tears and pain.
